Passive, emasculated and people-pleasing men all have one thing in common.
They have a dysfunctional relationship with anger.
But if you do not have access to your anger, bad things happen.
You do not have access to your self-esteem.
You lose the ability to set boundaries.
You lack a spine or a backbone.
You are more likely to attract disrespect and toxic, draining relationships.
And according to physician and author Dr. Gabor Maté, a chronic lack of assertiveness can indirectly lead to life-threatening illnesses.
Your anger is healthy and necessary.
If you make the mistake of thinking that anger and aggression are the same thing and you need to suppress it at all costs…
You miss the lesson that anger teaches you.
When anger comes up in your system and it's integrated in a healthy way, that anger is telling you that something important to you is being threatened.
Anger is telling you that there's something that you are allowing, that in order for
you to maintain healthy self-respect, you have to stop allowing.
I've worked with countless men who told me they “never get angry.”
However, when we started digging just deeper under the surface, we found out a few things.
1) That anger was actually something way more toxic. Resentment. Towards
everyone in his life, his wife, people at work, his parents when he was a kid etc. Toxic, corrosive resentment.
2) He’s actually depressed. Anger that doesn't have a way out gets turned inwards where it can manifest as low energy, depression. Low energy. No motivation. He doesn’t know what he wants anymore.
3) No self-esteem whatsoever. Because deep down, if he doesn't have his anger integrated, on some level he doesn't actually believe that he's worth the anger. He doesn't believe his reality, happiness and life is worth fighting for.
Can anger be expressed and dealt with in unhealthy ways?
Obviously, it happens all the time.
But by suppressing your anger entirely, you open the door to way worse things coming through.
That's why I teach all of my clients, including you, to make friends with your anger.
Allow yourself to feel it, listen to it, and try and understand what it's there to teach you.
Stop being a people pleaser in your relationships, and start being a powerful, competent, grounded, relational leader.
